Success and Goal Setting (See Handout from Class)
1. Define success as you understand it. Use quotes from your resources to support your opinion. You can use the bible, your parents, teachers, internet, etc. Be sure to make alist o your references. Discuss how you expect to achieve success in your own life.
2. Explain goal setting. What are the steps? Include examples of goals you have set in the past and how you achieved them.
3. Set a new goal for this class. Explain your goal, your plan, potential roadblocks and how you will overcome those. Explain how you will know if you have achieved your goal.
4. Choose a Civil War figure to do a research report about. Bring 3 references/resources to class concerning this figure. Contnu reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables.

Assignment DUE OCT 19
Reread lesson 6 and 7. Rewrite Escape from the Underground Railroad. You may change the character and details of the story but keep the general plot the same. Use the checklist to make sure you include all elements required with proper indicators.

You will be using your rough draft "Slavery" from lesson 2.
Reread Lesson 4. Write a cinquain entitled "The Slave". Use consonance, assonance or alliteration in the poem at least once.
Write a final draft of your slavery report with your cinquain at the beginning of the report. The cinquain will be centered, italicized and separate from the body paragraphs.
Add dress-ups and sentence openers as listed on your checklist. Be sure to indicate these as discussed in class. Remember to type, double-space, name/date etc. You will need to handwritten the indicators in the margin and underline dress-ups.
Review Lesson 4 vocabulary.

Welcome to Advanced English. This is a 2 semester course covering American Literature and Composition based on U.S. History resources.
